Over the years, I’ve watched Brainwavz go from a manufactuer of IEMs turn into something much more. They branched out quickly into the on-ear market and eventually into the full-sized market. With the introduction of the AP001, it marks Brainwavz’ first steps into the amplifier world. The AP001 is an affordable, entry-level amplifier for portable use.
Frequency Response: 10 Hz – 100 kHz
Input: 3.5 mm Headphone Jack
Output: 3.5 mm Headphone Jack (x2)
In the Box
The little black box that is the Brainwavz AP001 is actually quite attractive in design due to its subtle queues that it entails. More specifically, the concentric, circular ridges that line the face of the amplifier gives an design to the AP001 reminiscent of a record or CD. The rest of the box utilizes glossy plastic.
Brainwavz gives a bit of a bass boost with the AP001 amplifier. If you’re one looking for a bit more boom to your sound, this will most definitely satisfy you. However, if you’re looking for something that is free of coloration, this may not be the direction to go. The treble can be a smeared at times, but other than that, it is a pretty good sound. In terms of actual amplification, the AP001 gives a slight increase in volume in contrast to running straight out of my iPhone.
For being such a small device, I really don’t have too much to say about the AP001. In terms of build, the face looks absolutely gorgeous while the plastic seems to have ample thickness. Personally, I feel that the device is structurally sound and won’t break on you. The amplifier did come with some unwanted scratches on the back glossy plastic, however.
There is a distinct bass-heavy sound to the AP001, which is one main reason to use it, for a bass boost that doesn’t involve running a digital equalizer. It, however, don’t offer much more power output in contrast to my iPhone. For its size, that is kind of expected however. Outside that main reason, the AP001 does have 2 audio outputs (3.5 mm) which allows you to share your music with a friend quickly.
One big thing that Brainwavz does have going for it with the AP001 is going to be its price. At 30 bucks, it’s actually quite affordable. It’s portable with good battery life while being able to add a nice bass boost to give a little more boom to your step. If needed, the AP001 will also allow you to share your music with a nearby fellow.
Brainwavz did a good job with their first amplifier. It makes a respectable portable amp, though it could use a little more power. In terms of audio, it is a little on the bassy side for me, though I can most definitely see someone wanting that extra bass boost.
And for 30 bucks, that’s not too bad.
